Overcoming Trauma of the Pandemic in Workplace

“Trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic can lead to decreased productivity and performance in workplace.”

The pandemic has been an ongoing traumatic event for workers, as they grapple with health concerns, financial insecurity, and the loss of loved ones. The trauma can lead to decreased productivity and performance. Harvard Business Review proposed an exercise, aims to overcome the trauma that can be conducted in a team meeting or workshop setting;

1. Creating a safe space.

Establishing a safe and supportive environment is important for employees to open up and share their experiences. Begin by emphasizing confidentiality and empathy. Encourage them to share their thoughts, emotions, and challenges openly without judgment.

2. Identifying the challenges and lessons learned.

Ask employees to reflect on their personal and professional challenges during the pandemic to gain clarity about the impact of the pandemic. And then guide the discussion towards identifying lessons learned from the challenges. By focusing on positive outcomes, individuals can regain a sense of control and purpose.

3. Goal setting and moving forward.

After the trauma has been acknowledged and lessons have been learned, it’s time to set individual and collective goals for personal and professional growth. Encourage employees to identify actionable steps to overcome the challenges by building resilience moving forward.

4. Support and follow-up.

Ensure that ongoing support and resources are available to employees, including access to counseling services and employee assistance programs. Regular check-ins and follow-ups can reinforce the commitment to healing and create a supportive workplace culture.
