Trend to Lose and to Keep in Revamping Workplace
“Trend to Lose and to Keep in Revamping Workplace”
The tumultuous ride of 2023 forced workplaces to adapt and evolve at an unprecedented pace. As we bid farewell to a challenging year, it’s crucial to reflect on the trends that shaped the workplace landscape. Some of those trends deserve to be phased out in 2024 and others should be embraced for the betterment of work culture and productivity.
Lengthy and unnecessary meetings is one of the trends that needs to be weeded out. Executives spend a third of their working week in meetings, with 25-50% of meeting time considered wasted (forbes.com). Another trend that’s better to be phased out is quiet-quitting, the concept symbolizing a minimalistic approach to work that dominated work-related headlines last year (hbr.org). Debate over remote work was also frequently debated. Instead of perpetuating this dichotomy, companies should recognize that one size does not fit all and need to embrace a personalized approach to work.
However, there are trends that warrant preservation. The adoption of salary transparency laws and the growing willingness of companies to disclose pay ranges contribute to fairer workplaces and helps combat racial and gender pay disparities. The shift towards investing in training existing talent rather than poaching from competitors also needs to be kept. Moreover, the implementation of mandatory PTO (paid time off) policies is a welcome change that removes uncertainty, encouraging employees to take breaks, and contributing to a more relaxed and recharged workforce (Padova, 2022).
