Talking Politics at Work

“Talking Politics at Work”

In the midst of campaign season leading up to the upcoming 2024 presidential election, politic has increasingly found its way to be the topic of water-cooler talk in the workplace. Talking politics at work can be a slippery slope. While it can foster valuable discussion and connection, it can also lead to division and discomfort. Forbes’ survey found that nearly 50% of those surveyed emphasized the significance of working at a company where their colleagues align with their political view, while 42% indicated that they’ve considered seeking new employment due to the political perspective of their coworkers.

Banning politic discussions at work is hardly an option. With the rise of social and political movements, the blurring of personal and professional lives through social media, and a growing emphasis on diversity and inclusion, the line between personal and professional is more porous than ever (cultureamp.com). Therefore, it’s important to navigate the political landscape at work with care and sensitivity.

Since talking politics at work is unavoidable, company leaders need to align discussion about politics with the company’s culture and values. They should set tone by modeling respectful discourse and demonstrating a commitment to diversity inclusion. They also should lead by example, demonstrate skill and self-awareness to welcome contrasting opinions, promote an environment of open dialogue, and address any conflicts or issue that may arise (hbr.org, shrm.org).
