Supply, Demand, and Ticket-war

“As long as there is imbalance between the availability of tickets and the demand from eager fans, the ticket war will persist.”

The highly-anticipated Coldplay concert ignited ticket-war in Indonesia. This is not the first time we encounter ticket-wars; previously, K-Pop fans also struggled to get tickets for their favorite band concerts. Some of them were willing to pay massively inflated resale prices, or known as ticket scalping. So, what causes this phenomenon of ticket-war?

In the world of live entertainment, the demand for tickets to popular events often outweighs the limited supply. As long as there is imbalance between the availability of tickets and the demand from eager fans, the ticket-war will persist. This also creates a breeding ground for ticket scalping.

The internet has transformed the ticket scalping landscape. The ticket scalpers could secure tickets in bulk using sophisticated software and bots, creating an artificial scarcity, and resale tickets at prices higher than face value. In other words, they are making tickets unaffordable and creating an unfair marketplace. Additionally, it can lead to issues such as counterfeit tickets. In response to these concerns, legislators have implemented measures to combat ticket scalping. Unfortunately, Indonesia has not had well-rounded regulations regarding this issue (detik.com).
